On August 15, 1951, Gemini Circus held its maiden performance in the town of Billimoria, Gujarat under the leadership of M.V. Sankaran, and K. Sahadeva.
Distinguished leaders of our country, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, E.M.S. Namboothiripad, A.K. Gopalan, M.G. Ramachandran and world-famous leaders like Martin Luther King, Mrs. King and Lady Mountbatten were among those who came to see the circus.
M.V. Sankaran was a legend of Indian circus and led the country’s delegation to the World Circus Festival in 1964 in Moscow, Sochi, and Yalta. She received praise from Alexander Voloshin and first lady cosmonaut Tereskova Valentina. The government issued diplomatic visas to the entire delegation. of India. This unique accolade comes with the honor of being adjudged as the most attractive troupe in India. In the 60s, the director of the Russian Circus College, Alexander Voloshin, came to India with his Russian circus and imparted expert training to the artists of the Gemini Circus.
The film industry had a special relationship with the circus. The famous Raj Kapoor film ‘Mera Naam Joker’, Mithun Chakraborty’s ‘Shikari’, and Kamala Haasan’s ‘Apoorva Bhadraman’ were shot with Gemini Circus.
